Hal Holbrook

(1925-2021)

Hal Holbrook was an astonishing talent, and deservedly called an American Treasure. He was brilliant, kind, dignified, honorable, courageous, and loving.

But above all, Hal was a devoted friend to all of us in Room 56 for over thirty years.

He attended countless productions in our tiny classroom; invited the students to perform at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C.; hosted the kids at his home; and dazzled them with performances of Shakespeare and Twain, making sure that every youngster had his undivided attention after a show.

Hal taught all of us what Mark Twain appreciated more than love—he reveled in the affection the world showered upon him. Dear Hal, all of your friends in Room 56 will always love you and hold you in our hearts with the deepest affection imaginable. When the students grow up, I hope they are like Hal Holbrook.
